When a bird trains it’s babies to spread their wings the most important element is “ownership“. If the bird does not take complete control of their wings and physical strength to fly, they ultimately will not fly. The adult bird must train her babies to be mature and brave enough to fly on their own.
A Teacher can promote ownership in the classroom simply by providing an alternative seating, or standing, option. The second you place one standing desk, you have now created OPTION 2. It is a game changer. It creates novelty in the beginning. Ultimately it creates choice in the classroom.
When you promote choice you promote ownership. When a student makes their own decisions about their learning space they start to become self aware about how they learn and the environment that comes with it.
More choice, more ownership.
